Hybrid design and prototyping of metamaterials and metasurfaces

Metamaterials are engineered materials conceived and designed to achieve very special or even unique physical properties, which depend on the micro nanostructures, more than chemical composition of raw employed for their fabrication. Normally metamaterials made periodic repetitions unit cells Boolean combinations lattices porous building blocks. Metasurfaces quasi-two-dimensional version generally applied controlling electromagnetic acoustic waves reaching them. mainly created through high-precision additive manufacturing technologies, while metasurfaces normally obtained using micromanufacturing techniques from electronics industry laser patterning methods. Consequently, potential benefits industrial applications multi-scale hierarchical metastructures, could be by merging metasurfaces, remain unexplored. Through innovative combination 3D CAD modelling resources specific tools computational mapping topographical 2D images this study validates possibility texturing blocks metamaterials, hence designs with interwoven metasurfaces. These microtextured additively manufactured, two-photon polymerisation, demonstrate feasibility bridging gap between analyse current challenges these digital materials.
